THE
WOMEN’S AGENDA: SHAPING
PUBLIC POLICY |
In March 2006, the CWCEDC
hosted The
Womens Agenda:Shaping Public Policy as a pre-conference
forum at CCEDNet’s annual national conference. This
is the first time in its history that the CCEDNET conference
has offered a pre-forum focused on women-centred CED. It
was, however, so successful that the Council is currently negotiating
a ‘women-centred CED stream’ throughout
the entire conference in coming years.
This half day forum focused on policy as
it relates to women, particularly policies that impact women’s
participation in the economy. Economist
and media commentator Armine Yalnizyan provided an
overview
of
critical policy issues that affect women’s economic self-sufficiency. Our
panel of Experts from the Field who
have learned through living and doing will told their stories. Government
Relations Experts offered information, tools and insights to
support women’s
participation in the policy development process. Participants
reflected individually and collectively, shared strategies, insights
and
experiences
to engage women in policy development and strengthen women-centred
CED in Canada.
Seventy-two individuals attended. Participants included representatives from federal and provincial governments Status of Women, HRSDC, Manitoba Advisory Council on the Status of Women, funders, Canadian and international women’s organizations and women participating in CED locally – indicating an extensive reach to multiple stakeholders. Participants
particularly appreciated the expertise of the speakers and the
information available in the booklet of best practices.
